Designing a living room can be a bit of a challenge, especially when you have an existing piece of furniture that serves as the foundation for your creative decisions. In this blog post, we will explore how we transformed a living room by incorporating a striking blue sectional into the design. By carefully selecting complementary elements, customizing pillows and artwork, and adding functional storage solutions, we were able to create a harmonious and personalized space that exceeded our client's expectations.

Embracing the Blue:

The starting point for our design journey was the client's existing blue sectional. Rather than seeing it as a constraint, we viewed it as an opportunity to build a cohesive color scheme. We love to incorporate blues into our designs to give our homes a true coastal feel, so the existing sectional was just an added plus. To make the sectional feel more personalized, we designed custom pillows using fabrics that played well with the deep blue hue. These pillows not only added comfort but also brought the clients' unique style into the space. Understanding their furry companions, we incorporated a performance rug to withstand the playful antics of their chocolate lab and the upcoming arrival of a puppy.

Complementing Accessories

To ensure a visually appealing and cohesive look, we carefully selected accessories that complemented the deep blue sofa. By strategically incorporating décor items, such as side tables with storage capabilities, we added both practical functionality and aesthetic value to the living room. These accessories not only provided additional storage but also created a balanced visual composition, enhancing the overall appeal of the space.

Connecting the Living and Dining Areas:

With the living room and dining room situated in close proximity, it was essential to establish a visual connection between the two spaces. To achieve this, we introduced a custom piece of art that incorporated navy blues, mirroring the color of the existing sectional. This art piece served as a bridge, seamlessly tying the living room and dining room together and creating a sense of harmony. Art is one of the most personal selections a person will choose for their home. It was important to us that the piece we selected was not only complimentary to the personality of the homeowners, but also tied in with their existing furniture.

Custom Bar and Floating Shelves:

To address a large empty wall and inject some intrigue into the room, we conceptualized a custom bar with a console and floating shelves. The bar console, painted in a light blue shade to tie in with the sectional, added a touch of sophistication and functionality to the space between the living room and the kitchen. The wooden floating shelves introduced a natural element, enhancing the overall warmth and ambiance of the space. In the absence of hardwired sconces, we didn't let limitations hinder our vision. We were able to install battery-powered bulbs, seamlessly illuminating the bar without compromising its aesthetic appeal. This innovative solution ensured that the space remained well-lit and created a cozy atmosphere, all while maintaining the room's polished look.

Designing a living room around an existing piece of furniture, such as a blue sectional, presents an exciting opportunity to unleash your creativity. By embracing the sectional as the focal point and incorporating elements that complemented its color, we were able to transform the space into a harmonious and personalized oasis. From custom pillows and artwork to functional storage solutions and creative lighting, every decision was made with intention, resulting in a living room that perfectly captured our client's style and needs.
